My dream fish
Media arts Gateway 1 assessment 1
Project Detail
This was my introduction to media arts. I had very little experience with adobe and technology before this. I hand drew/painted all of the elements in this video.
Its amazing to see how far I've come from this, how much time this took me back then and how much I've learnt in the animation process.
The path that drew my interest was dreams and surrealism. I also wanted to utilise art I had already created this year and interact by selecting components to create movement. Selecting a few surrealist paintings completed this year, I thought of ways of unifying them in a narrative.
Inspiration: Through creating this piece I found a lot of inspiration for style and movement from both spirited away and Avatar the last airbender. The ghibli studio style captures so much delicacy and wonder in the way the characters move, as well as the beautiful colour schemes and contrasts.
I used a quick sketch storyboard to map out the trajectory of the fish. I let the fish move from left to right, wanting the movement to feel comfortable and natural as left to right and top to bottom is the natural order of how most people perceive both writing and images. Wanting to make the transitions cohesive I made sure the fish appeared close to the spot it disappeared on the last frame, as if shifting to a camera zooming in or out on its journey. Additionally I decided here what kind of colour schemes I wanted to use. Using the same few colours, I started off with a high saturation, bright background with more greens than blues. With each scene I shift slightly darker, while also changing the hue of my main colour scheme. As the eye tree becomes a darker green, the three ladies are more of a rich blue and purple and the sea monster using much darker greens and greys. This progression of colour gives off the impression of the fish swimming deeper and deeper into this eerie ocean world. Finally, I added a layered audio, one instrumental and one underwater audio, enhancing the sensory experience of the video.
